Cave Diving

I first dived the cenotes of the Yucatan peninsula in 2011, and was so impressed I returned 6 months later to start my formal cave certification training in Tulum. Over a period of five years I underwent training and performed dozens of ‘apprentice’ dives in the caves of Mexico and Florida, obtaining full cave certification in 2016.

My favourite caves are the spectacular systems of the Yucatan peninsula. Formerly a coral reef, the entire region emerged from the sea around 65 million years ago as a limestone plain, and caves with stalactites and stalagmites formed over subsequent millions of years through water action. These highly-decorated passages were flooded after the last ice age, and the crystal clear water provides for some of the best dive experiences around.

Photographing these caves is a challenge, and these photos represent my first two attempts. I will be returning late in 2023 for another round of photo expeditions.
