The nudibranchs of Great Keppel Island

Nudibranchs, often referred to as “sea slugs,” are a fascinating group of marine gastropod mollusks known for their vibrant colors, intricate patterns, and mesmerizing forms. These captivating creatures can be found in oceans worldwide, from shallow coastal waters to the depths of the abyss. What sets nudibranchs apart is their remarkable diversity, with thousands of known species, each exhibiting its own unique characteristics and adaptations.

Beyond their aesthetic appeal, nudibranchs play essential ecological roles as both predators and prey, contributing to the balance and health of marine ecosystems. They are renowned for their ability to accumulate and utilize toxic chemicals from their prey, which they employ as a defense mechanism.

I have been documenting the local nudibranchs of Keppel Bay since 2019, with a total of 25 confirmed (photographed) species to date. I have just released a poster of these colourful locals, available now.

Available now! Nudibranchs of Great Keppel Island A2 full -colour poster (600 x 420 mm). AUD$25 + postage. Please email IPI for details.
