The wrecks of Truk lagoon

In early 2020 I travelled to the Micronesian state of Chuuk (Truk) to spend a week diving the World War II wrecks of Truk lagoon. Truk was a major Japanese stronghold in the Pacific during the war and served as a key naval/air and logistics hub.

On February 17th a large US naval force conducted a surprise aerial attack on Truk, unleashing a barrage of bombs, torpedoes, and strafing runs against Japanese ships, aircraft, and facilities. The attack was highly successful, resulting in the sinking of over 50 Japanese warships, merchant vessels, and aircraft.

Today these wrecks lay at varying depths around Truk lagoon, from the ‘Emily’ flying boat at 15 m to the deck of the San Francisco Maru at 55 m. Penetrating these aging wrecks requires care but divers are rewarded by hidden gems in the engine rooms and holds of the ships, including ‘zero’ fighter planes, vehicles and war material.
